New Year's Resolutions
Many people make promises to themselves in January to start positive habits, or stop negative habits. My resolutions usually have to do with eating healthful food and exercising more. So far, I'm doing pretty well. I have followed a vegetarian diet and am getting back to my step aerobics. I also decided to enhance my professional profile by presenting at the regional TexTESOL IV conference right here in Houston. I'll be presenting a quick share (15 minute practical exercise) about the need for phrasal verb proficiency for English Language Learners. Many textbooks have either limited or eliminated phrasal verb instruction. I believe this is a mistake because native speakers will almost always use the phrasal verb over Latin synonyms. During my time at Lone Star College, I developed the "Phrasal Verb Challenge" which combines focused study with practical application outside the classroom. My students find the challenge both fun and effective. If you are an ESOL professional in the Houston area, I encourage you to come visit my quick share 3:30 - 4:15 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Hilton Houston Galleria Area. If you are not in the area, I would be happy to share my information free of charge.
