More Residency Positions Coming!
According to the AAMC, the United States faces a projected physician shortage of up to 139,000 doctors by 2033, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these shortages. To ensure that more physicians are able to care for patients, Congress has increased funding for graduate medical education (GME), adding 1,000 new positions in teaching hospitals.
Through this increase in federal funding for physician training, Congress also has taken steps to prioritize training programs in rural areas and facilities that provide care for underserved communities.
It seems to me that this is encouraging news for IMGs because it increases the residency positions overall, and the funding is concentrated in the areas most covered by IMGs, Primary Care in underserved areas. This may not change the placement opportunities for the main Match, but programs may try to gain access to those federal dollars by increasing their participation in SOAP. The real impact will probably not be realized until Match 2022. So, hang on IMGs, better times may be ahead!
